Getting the Message is the 8-session alcohol and drug education diversion program at Prevention and Recovery Northwest.  The program encourages behavior change through educational and behavioral skills training.  According to researchers, the briefest interventions sometimes produce the greatest effects, and reduce recidivism.

Session One  is an Introduction designed to help participants develop an awareness of the types of behaviors and attitudes that lead to substance abuse problems such as Chemical Dependency.  Participants are given a brief overview of the impact of alcohol and drug use to family dynamics, family roles, and relationships to understand the impact their drinking and using can have on others.

Session Two covers Motivation and Dynamics for Change.  This session helps participants to recognize and understand personal motivation and how to move through the different stages of change.  Tools to change ways of thinking about alcohol and drugs are provided.  Participants are given an orientation to change, and the pro's and con's to change.

Session Three is called Social Skills.  Participants are given information about socialization and the connection between alcohol and drug use and socializing in the American culture.  Suggestions on how to deal with their everyday life and not use are discussed.

Session Four focuses on Problem Solving.  This session provides information about the different aspects of solving a problem.  Clients learn and practice a proven method for solving problems.

Session Five explores Thinking and Feeling Skills.  Information is provided on how alcohol and drug use affects a person's psychological state.  This session provides information about the inter-relatedness of thinking and feeling.  Participants learn the dynamics of self-control and impulsivity with thoughts and emotions.
