The original mission of the Student Assistance Program was to intervene with young people from chemically dependent homes in order to prevent the pattern continuing generation to generation. This expanded to providing counseling and intervention with youth abusing drugs and alcohol themselves and providing support to maintain abstinence to those returning to school after alcohol and drug treatment. The State of Oregon Mental Health Division has recognized PARNW’s Student Assistance Program as a model program. The counselor is often part of a team or may take the lead in handling a difficult situation. The program offers crisis intervention for all sorts of student emergencies from grief related reactions to the death of a fellow student to personal crises and physical or sexual abuse, substance abuse and suicidal thoughts or attempts. Program Services include assessment, crisis intervention and referral; counseling and skill groups for students; consultation for school staff and counseling for families. Counseling groups serve youth from substance abusing homes, students in recovery from alcohol/drug abuse and students involved in substance use and risky behaviors. Additional groups may target grief and loss, anger management, abuse, school problem solving, peer or family stress with emphasis on positive coping and new skills like refusing drugs and/or risk behaviors. In the last few years we have had an increased focus on skills for conflict management and gang intervention, and the way these issues interact with substance abuse. |
