The SUCCESS program is a prevention program targeted to middle school youth at high risk of school failure and dropout, substance abuse and other problems. The program utilizes the GATSBI (Gaining Achievement Through Supportive Behavioral Intervention) curriculum developed by Susan Kane-Ronning, Ph.D., in a daily class format. The program is currently operating at three local Middle Schools, and serves regular and special education students. After the first two years of the program students began to notice and hear about so many students gaining positive results that they began to refer to our class as the "Success Class", hence the change in name to the SUCCESS Program. We have consistently seen remarkable results in our middle school prevention program since that time. High-risk students are identified by school staff and offered a chance for intensive skill building and support toward school and life success. Parents are contacted regularly during the year and are involved in problem solving. Students receive instruction in the areas of communication and social skills, study skills, anger management, problem-solving, stress management and relaxation, substance abuse education and refusal skills. Throughout the program, students use group-counseling process in class to learn to interact appropriately with and offer support to peers. Attendance and grade point average are monitored, along with behavior in all classes and discipline referrals. Regular teacher and parent contacts maintain open communication and help to create student behavior change. Behavioral contracts are developed with students to create long-term behavior change, and reinforcements and rewards are negotiated with each student to provide motivation for change. Community service projects strengthen positive self-images and build connection with the larger community. Where peer tutors or Natural Helper trained students are available; relationships are fostered to further connect high-risk students within their school.
