Prevention And Recovery Northwest has been working on site in Eugene and Springfield schools since we pioneered Student Assistance Programs in 1983.  We started the more intensive SUCCESS Program in 1991.  We became a member of the Youth Intervention Network in 1999, as a contact in our schools for Network teens.  Over the years we have served more than 5,000 teens and families.

About half the students seek our help on their own. Parents, school staff, service community members or other students refer others.  First, we evaluate the needs, then pair kids with services that fit.  This may mean referral to a community service or private counselor, but most are involved in skill / support groups or individual counseling at the school, led by our counselors. SUCCESS counselors are also teachers, since students earn education credit.

We help to:

  1. motivate drug-involved students to accept treatment and support their movement out of the drug culture

  2. promote problem solving about school work, attendance, relationships with parents, peers and teachers; set goals and track progress

  3. teach, practice and reward new skills like anger management, conflict resolution or study and social skills

  4. provide guidance and support to resolve grief or a history of trauma / abuse and to move on in strength and confidence

  5. teach, practice and reward the use of alcohol and drug refusal skills plus the development of healthy alternatives ( rock climbing, art, bike maintenance, horseback riding, gardening or other challenges)

  6. educate groups of students about the risks and costs of alcohol and other drug use

  7. teach stress management and coping skills like how to recognize and intervene when a friend is in trouble with high risk behavior or suicidal thoughts

  8. advise student clubs that promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle
